“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
~ Victor Frankl
My approach is to start where you are, discuss your goals and intentions for coming to therapy, explore past experiences as they relate to your situation now in a supportive and collaborative way. My theoretical approach to therapy is guided by psychodynamic and humanistic theories and I also draw from mindfulness practices and cognitive-behavioral techniques when they may be helpful. Additionally, I believe in each person's intrinsic capacity to learn, heal, and grow.
Sessions with clients range from engaging in traditional talk therapy to sharing stress relief techniques such as breathing or meditation to using art materials to help clients gain perspective on what they are experiencing and changes they would like to see in their lives. Some people find art therapy to be especially helpful for expressing feelings that may go beyond words, for meaning making, problem solving, stress reduction, self esteem building, and for gaining a new perspective on a situation. A person does not need to be an artist to benefit from the use of art therapy.
Additionally, I am an Approved Supervisor and offer supervision and consultation for clinicians who are working towards Licensure in the state of Washington or Registration with the American Art Therapy Association.
